Help with Downloading

This page is intended to provide some guidance for data download. We have tried to provide the data in a variety of formats so that it can be used relatively easily. Use the sections below to help decide which format you wish to use.

General Download Suggestions

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer, when you click on the download link from our site you will get a message like that below:

Generally, it is much better to select "Save" and save the file to your hard disk; you can then open it from there. Not only will this permit your virus checker (if you have one) to scan the file, but it will also allow you to manipulate the file faster and easier.

if you do choose "Open", you will be working on a temporary file on your hard drive anyway—you can manipulate or even change the data, but when you try to save it you will be asked for a new name. You will never be in danger of accidentally changing data on the file on our web server; the web server will not permit that.

If you are short on disk space, note that the size of the file is given on the security warning screen (in the case pictured, 4.77 megabytes).

If you are using another web browser, you may get a different message. Follow the directions; again, it is better to save the file to your hard drive if you actually intend to use it later.

Maps

If You Have AutoCAD or Microstation
Download the file by clicking the link in the "AutoCAD DXF" column.
If You Plan to Use Surfer
Download the file by clicking the link in the "Surfer Base Map" column.
If You Want to Import into a GIS
Check your program's documentation. Most often, the best option is to download the file by clicking the link in the "AutoCAD DXF" column.
If You Just Want an Image of the Map
Download the file by clicking the link in the "PDF" column.

Artifact Count Spreadsheet

If You Have Microsoft Excel 97, Microsoft Excel 2002 or Microsoft 2003 (or a later version)
Download the file by clicking the link in the "Excel 2003" column. When given the option, save the file to your hard disk.
If You Have an Earlier Version of Microsoft Excel
Download the file by clicking the link in the "Excel 95" column. The Microsoft Excel 95 file format is compatible with versions of Excel prior to Excel 97.
If You Plan to Use Another Spreadsheet
Download the file as a "CSV" (comma separated variable) file. Virtually all spreadsheets will then allow you to import a CSV file; follow the instructions in the Help section of your program.
If You Want to Use the XML Spreadsheet Format
Download the file as a "XML Spreadsheet." This is a relatively new format; check your software's documentation for how to open and use it.

Artifact Databases

If You Have Microsoft Access 2003 (or a later version)
Download the file by clicking the link in the "Access 2003" column. When given the option, save the file to your hard disk.
If You Have an Earlier Version of Microsoft Access
Download the file by clicking the link in the "Access 97" column. The Microsoft Access 97 file format is compatible with versions of Access that include Access 97, Access 2000, and Access 2002.
If You Plan to Use Another Database Program
Download the file as a "CSV" (comma separated variable) file. Virtually all databases will then allow you to import a CSV file; follow the instructions in the Help section of your program. Note that, unlike with Microsoft Access, you will need to download the artifact and context tables separately for each site. (The Access file format also incorporates both tables, but encapsulates them in its MDB format.)
If You Plan to Use Microsoft Excel
Download the file as a "CSV" file, as above. You can import this file by opening Excel and selecting File, Open and choosing "CSV File" in the "Files of type:" box.

Artifact Distribution Images

Artifact distribution files are provided as PDF files, which can be opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader. To save bandwidth and to make downloads easier, the PDF files for each site are provided as a single "ZIP" file. The ZIP file format compresses the files for transmission; they can be "unzipped" using a variety of free tools commonly available, including WinZip and PKZip.

Midden Analysis Images

Midden analysis files are provided as PDF files, which can be opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader. To save bandwidth and to make downloads easier, the PDF files for each site are provided as a single "ZIP" file. The ZIP file format compresses the files for transmission; they can be "unzipped" using a variety of free tools commonly available, including WinZip and PKZip.
